Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to allow Alabama to move forward with its discriminatory congressional map is a stunning departure from legal precedent and another direct attack on Black voters in Alabama. This fight is not over. Black Alabamians have fought too hard and sacrificed too much to be dragged backward by extremist politicians and an activist Court. Black voters make up nearly one-third of Alabama's electorate and we deserve no less than two seats where we can select a candidate of our choice. We are not going back!

Sewell Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Allowing Alabama to Proceed with Suppressing Black Representation May 11, 2026 Washington D.C. — U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing the State of Alabama to proceed with suppressing Black representation: "Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to allow Alabama to move forward with its discriminatory congressional map is a stunning departure from legal precedent and another direct attack on Black voters in Alabama. "Let’s be clear. Alabama lawmakers intentionally discriminated against Black voters in drawing the 2023 map. A federal district court said so. The Supreme Court said so. Yet now, in this stunning reversal, the Court’s right-wing majority has completely ignored its previous rulings in order to give state officials the green light to suppress Black representation in Alabama. Moreover, the Court has injected needless chaos and confusion into an election that has already begun while rewarding state officials who openly defied court orders in bad faith. "This fight is not over. Black Alabamians have fought too hard and sacrificed too much to be dragged backward by extremist politicians and an activist Court. We will not stand by quietly while Alabama Republicans try to erase the progress secured by the Civil Rights Movement and take our state back to the era of Jim Crow. The people of Alabama must stand up, speak out, and get out to the polls. If the courts and our state legislature won't protect the rights of Black and minority voters, then we must organize, mobilize, and vote like our lives depend on it. We must reaffirm, through action, that every American deserves a voice in our democracy.

Sewell Statement on Alabama State Legislature's Passage of Legislation Paving the Way to Erase Black Representation May 8, 2026 Montgomery, AL — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the legislation passed by the Alabama State Legislature to pave the way to erase Black representation through partisan gerrymandering: “This is a dark day for the State of Alabama. The Foot Soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement fought, bled, and died to overturn Jim Crow in the South and secure Black representation in government. Today, Republicans in the Alabama State House passed legislation to erase their legacy and suppress the voices of Black Alabamians. “To be clear, the State of Alabama remains under a federal court injunction which prevents the state from redistricting until 2030. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on lifting the injunction. However, Alabama Republicans’ rush to suppress Black representation while the injunction remains demonstrates the dire need for federal protections for minority voters. “We will not stand by quietly while Alabama Republicans try to erase the progress secured by the Civil Rights Movement and take our state back to the era of Jim Crow. The people of Alabama must stand up, speak out, and get out to the polls. If the courts and our state legislature won't protect the rights of Black and minority voters, then we must organize, mobilize, and vote like our lives depend on it. We must reaffirm, through action, that every American deserves a voice in our democracy.” ### Press Releases 119th Congress Voting Rights Permalink: https://sewell.house.gov/2026/5/rep-sewell-statement-on-alabama-state-legislature-s-passage-of-legislation-paving-the-way-to-erase-black-representation Press Releases Newsletters Videos Press Kit Home blue sky Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube We will not stand by quietly while

I am especially grateful to Congressman Arrington for his close partnership and for naming the bill after my mother, the late Nancy Gardner Sewell. I know that she would be immensely proud of the work we are doing to provide greater access early detection cancer screenings. Her legacy will live on in the millions of Americans whose lives will be changed this legislation. This wouldn’t have been possible without the bipartisan leadership of Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL) and Representative Jodey Arrington (R-TX) as well as Senators Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Mike Bennet (D-CO). ACS CAN strongly urges the Senate to pass this package which brings us one step closer to ending cancer as we know it, for everyone.

Sewell Celebrates House Passage of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act January 22, 2026 Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) celebrated House passage of H.R. 842, the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act . The legislation—led by Reps. Sewell and Jodey Arrington (TX-19)—was included in a package of Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bills which passed the House today by a bipartisan vote of 341 to 88. Watch Rep. Sewell’s remarks on YouTube here . “Today, the House took a major bipartisan step toward giving our seniors their best shot at catching cancer early," celebrated Rep. Sewell. "I am overjoyed that the House passed our bipartisan bill, the Nancy Gardner Sewell MCED Act. This critical milestone is years in the making, and was only made possible thanks to the efforts of amazing organizations, survivors, and patient advocates." "I am especially grateful to Congressman Arrington for his close partnership and for naming the bill after my mother, the late Nancy Gardner Sewell," continued Sewell. " I know that she would be immensely proud of the work we are doing to provide greater access early detection cancer screenings. Her legacy will live on in the millions of Americans whose lives will be changed this legislation.” Thanks to cutting-edge scientific advancements, new MCED screenings are emerging which hold the potential to detect dozens of forms of cancer with a simple blood test. Currently, 70% of cancer deaths occur in cancers with no screening. Under current law, it could take more than a decade before Medicare has the authority to cover these screenings once they are FDA approved. The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare MCED Screening Coverage Act would create a pathway for Medicare to cover MCED screenings once they are FDA approved
